Not Distracted

As I drive my car to church it is easy to become distracted. I can look at the latest sign on the bill-board or notice someone wearing a coat just like mine. Or I suddenly realise the trees are turning with their autumn colours or see someone I think I know. Although those sights are there, I must not pay attention to them, my eyes must be on the other traffic. There could be disastrous consequences if I don’t concentrate.

It is the same with our spiritual drive in life. There are many things that could turn us from God. The words from John Ernest Bode’s hymn ‘O Jesus I have promised.,’ explain it very well.’

The world is very near,

I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear

My foes are ever near me, Around me and within,

But Jesus now draw nearer And shield my soul from sin.

God can speak to us through these words. We also need to keep our eyes on Jesus. Just as there are signposts along the road, there are also spiritual signposts. Other Christians can walk with us, helping and guiding us. They are travelling the same road. They can help us and we can help them.
